| Liqueurs | |
| These sweet treats are made from spirits (such as brandy, rum, or whiskey) infused with flavoring from ingredients such as seeds, fruits, herbs, flowers, nuts or spices. Originally developed as after-dinner drinks, liqueurs also play an important role in many cocktails. |
| Brandy | |
| The name “brandy” comes from the Dutch brandewijn, meaning “burned (distilled) wine.” The real reason for using a stemmed, pear shaped snifter….is it is warmed by the hands, brandy releases it’s delightful aroma. |
| Gin | |
| Although mainly from grains such as barley, corn or rye, it is juniper berries that give gin it’s distinctive taste. With just a touch of vermouth, and garnished with a green olive, gin is the basis for the classic martini — shaken or stirred. |
| Whisky | |
| Made from grains such as barley, rye or corn. There are many varieties of whiskey, including scotch, bourbon and rye. Great straight up or on the rocks, with a spritz of soda or the classic whiskey sour. |
| Scotch | |
| The big difference between Scotch and Irish whisky is the distilling phase which is made twice with scotch and three times with Irish, giving Irish whisky a particular lightness. |
| Rum | |
| Distilled from fermented sugarcane juice or molasses. Most of the World’s rum comes from the Caribbean. It is used in cocktails including the Cuba Libre, mai tai, daiquiri and pina colada. |
| Vodka | |
| Vodka is a clear, colorless, unaged liquor “made from ethyl alcohol from agricultural origin”. Originally made in Russia from potatoes, vodka is usually made from corn, wheat or rye. Vodka’s transparent color and taste make it a versatile ingredient in many classic cocktails; the screwdriver, bloody Mary and vodka martini. When served straight, vodka should always be ice-cold. |
| Tequila | |
| The tangy taste of Tequila originated in Mexico, where it is made from the sweet sap of the agave plant. It is the main ingredient in the ever popular margarita – with or without salt. |
